Swimming for Health: How to Get Fit in the Pool

Last updated 3 months ago

Now that you’ve made your new year’s resolution to get in shape, it’s time to start exercising before bathing suit season is here. Here are a few ways to use your pool to get in shape:

  •  Keep Above Water
When you work out in your pool, you can reap countless health benefits. Exercising in the water improves your agility, balance, and endurance. In order to get the most out of your water workout, try not to let the water go above your waist. By keeping only your legs and feet in the water, your leg muscles will support some of your weight, while working harder because of the water resistance, giving you a better workout.

  • Stay Hydrated
Even though you’re in the water, it’s essential that you stay hydrated while exercising in your pool. Working out, in any circumstances, causes your body to sweat. Make sure you replenish your body’s water supply by frequently drinking water during your workout. Keep a water bottle at the side of your pool so you can stay hydrated.

  • Research Exercises
As you begin your pool workout regimen, take the time to research various exercises. A pool plank is a popular exercise among aquatic workout enthusiasts. A plank on land is challenging enough, but a water plank requires that you strengthen your core muscles while standing on an incline in the pool. Running in a zigzag pattern in your pool, also known as chaos cardio, is a great way to raise your heart rate.

  • Know Your Limits
Anytime you exercise, it’s important to know and accept your limits. There are a variety of pool workouts for athletes of all levels. If you haven’t exercised in a few months, consider starting at a beginner’s level rather than pushing yourself too quickly.
